Bad habits

Having a mother that has paperwork and organisation down to a fine art, I am almost the exact opposite and seriously struggle. It just doesnt interest me. Right now im feeling totally overwhelmed and procrastinating. And, its June - now thats a serious sign I need to get myself into order. Any solutions or suggestions on how to get myself sorted or is the a very common issue!? Kellie x

  1. Kellie, we were sisters in a past life I'm convinced of it! I'm also appallingly bad and disinterested in anything involving BORING, BORING paperwork! My Mum is a lawyer so she also has it down to an annoyingly fine art!

My advice... get your Mum to help set up some systems for you, get a good accountant and then devote a set time every week to clearing the decks. I get so stressed out by piles and piles of untouched paperwork... I feel like it's going to devour me whole! Just like housework, if you do a little often, it's never quite so bad!

Good luck and don't forget to reward yourself with something delicious at the end of the admin session!

  5. I hear you Kellie. I hate paperwork with a passion...which is a worry, considering I was a financial planner in a previous life! My advice? Hand it all over to a bookkeeper (or a highly organised mum maybe?), and focus on what you do best - the fun, creative, and very pretty stuff :) K xx

  7. The thing that helps me stay organized is writing things down. I have a day planner that I carry around with me, a little notepad for my purse, and a dry erase calendar in my cube at work. Good luck!

  8. Hi Kellie: The best thing to do is make a list - a list of all you need to get done, things pending, things that need to get done asap, etc. and this will help you put it into perspective. This way, you can see it on paper, so its not just in your head in a jumble. Tick items off as you get them done. This works for me and my husband is a huge list-maker! Let me know if it works! :))

  12. Kellie, we all get overwhelmed. Two things seem to work for me. 1. clearing the mind clutter - write everything down, whatever is on your mind or you think you must get done. You might feel less overwhelmed as a result. 2. organize those lists by projects, rather than making one long to-do list. I currently have a list of items to be done in anticipation of a summer trip I am planning. And one for a party I am working on.... And a list for various house projects, etc, etc. Good luck!

  15. Throw away more! I was holding on to fare too much paper and stuff I really didn't need. I now scan a lot of my "need to keep" papers and throw away the ones I really don't need any more. That made a lot of free space in my home office shelf's. I now try to (read: want to) use 15 minutes every day to place my papers in the right shelf or map.
When it comes to rest of my house I really have educate my family more! Ha! It's so easy to leave stuff everywhere. Since I don't like to live in a messy house, it usually end up with med picking up after everyone! I know - I'm a fool!
Did I actually give you any advice? Ha, ha, maybe not!
Wish you a not so messy day, Kellie!

    Hug,

  16. I feel the same way! My parents came in town for the weekend and I had the entire house spotless except for my bedroom and master bath, didn't get to that. I just shut the door all weekend and I hate it!! I've got to de-clutter and get things in order!!

  18. I´m not as organized as I´d love to be... I try and try - but after a week or so after I SWEAR that I´ll never be messy again, I forget and everything goes back to the messy "normal" I´m used to when it comes to papers. I´m just glad the messiness doesn´t apply for all of my home - otherwise I´m pretty neat and in order (strangely enough). :-)

  19. You're not alone believe me! I write lots of lists and try to make myself goals (whether realistic or not) to aspire to xo

  20. I get stressed if everything is not organised.. I wish I didn't I must admit but it does make life a little simpler even if it does also mean I have on going notes between iPhone, iPad and iMac ALL the time (not that was not a plug for Apple products, lol)

  21. o.k. do this: take a big piece of paper - write in BIG letters that "today i am beautifying my life" - decorate your paper..draw flowers, rainbow, what ever rocks your boat. hang it in "location", puts some music, a bit loud, retro disco maybe? take all these colorful bins you've purchased to organize your life and start jammin. don't forget to take a clear vase filled with cool water and lots of fresh mint. every time you feel procrastinated...take a zip and smile.you don't need vodka for this. in no time your new life will have stylish beat. sorry for the long message but i couldn't do it any other way. GOOD LUCK!

  22. I would be so thrilled to never do paperwork again!! Getting some nicer organizing bins would probably help!

  24. Kellie ~

My heart goes out to you. I think we all struggle with paperwork. I know I sure do. I try to get a handle on it, and, for a time, it seems to work, but before long, it starts creeping in and spreading. AAARGH! When that happens I start again. I think really it's a matter of finding a place for each category of paperwork and stay on top of it all the time. I have a habit of saying,"Oh, that goes in such and such a file. I'll put it there in a little while --- right after I..." and it doesn't get done. I wish you all the best, honey. Good luck. And if you get it figured out, let the rest of us in on it.

    Gentle hugs!

  25. Well, I hate paperwork so bad, and I always miss something.... my secret: do it little by little.

  26. You're def not alone. We have so much junk mail that we need to shred and paid bills that we keep that grows...you just run out of space to put it all! I would stay write it down in a planner, keep drawers for different things, etc.

  27. I know how you feel. I just can't bring my self to clean on a regular basis :D

  28. It is hard! Maybe just sort, find cute folders to make it a little bit prettier, and take a deep breath. Hang in there.

  29. The older I get, the less inclined I am to clean. It's so thankless. And it's neverending. So, why bother? My fear is throwing things in print away, convinced that I will need it a week later. That's rarely happened. We were drowning in paper. I'm getting better about letting things go. But I have massive tear sheet files.

  30. I'm with you on that one Kellie each tax year I say I'll be more organised but I never seem to be so I'm sitting in a pile of paper too! Happy sorting :) x
