This is what my tea now looks like. No more lovely milk!
I am very sad. My body has decided that it does not like milk anymore, or cheese or icecream for that matter. I was not happy about it...Still i had to move on and I have commenced my journey towards a life of soy milk.
Is my body just odd or is this normal to suddenly be unable to eat/drink something???

Soy milk is not the answer! Look towards rice milk, like skim milk but a bit waterier. I went through the same thing about 4 years ago.
ReplyDeleteI'm allergic to dairy too but soya milk is ewww..I drink Goats milk and it is actually so much nicer than cows milk plus its really good for you:) x
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid that it is pretty normal......usually when your a bit older but I know lots of my daughters friends have the same problem.... not to worry though....there are lots of nice teas....... have you tried licorice...it's really good but , I'm afraid, not the same as a good old cuppa with milk !! but you can use the rice milk ,so all is not lost. XXXX

ReplyDeleteI know it is going to take some time to get use to no milk..but is the best you can do for your body. I am mostly diary free (except for some cheese here an there)..but I read so many scary hormonal stories about milk..that personally I think is the best news! Even if you where doing organic you still get an enormous amount of hormones and acid that promote more estrogen in your body! It is hard to change your mind because at least I was raised on milk...

I'm sorry to hear that Kellie. I don't know what I'd do without milk products but I often think of cutting it out of my diet as it doesn't always agree with me and I keep hearing a lot of similar accounts to what Sasha writes above.

I have often heard that Kellie. I am sorry though as I know I would have a tough time. I am a soy milk drinker but by choice. Not a gallant choice but only because I got hooked while working for Starbucks. Chi + vanilla soy = joy! I have heard too that rice milk is tasty. I hope you find a good alternative. Oh..a friend told recently that soy ice cream is tasty!

If it makes you feel better, I can no longer indulge in dairy either. It seems my thighs have developed an allergy to ice cream in particular!

I'm so sorry to hear that you've become allergic, but some brands do make tasty soy milk and even soy creamer. If you get Silk brand soy where you are, their creamer is pretty yummy. I drink both soy and rice milks, and I make delicious smoothies with them, too. I still have an occasional ice cream or a bit of cheese, but my body is becoming less and less tolerant, so soon I will go completely dairy-free, too. Sigh.

ReplyDeleteHi Kellie. I actually have a host of allergies and unfortunately one of them is soy! Annoying! But I too used to drink Goat's milk. It tastes Ok in coffee. Have you tried A2 milk? It is cow's milk but has a different protein structure which is easier for human digestion thank normal milk.
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm sorry. My body doesn't do well with dairy either, so I keep it at a minimum. Though I do add a splash of cow's milk to my coffee each morning, I use soy in my cereal, lattes, and for drinking by the glass. Vanilla Silk is really quite tasty! I hope you find a type that tastes good to you.

As for the milk- I love soy milk esp. soy lattes with vanilla soy milk! I also love it in cereal sometimes when I crave a bowl!

Sorry to hear about your dairy allergy. The exact same thing happened to my friend - it came out of the blue and she's been intolerant of it ever since. Then again, dairy isn't the best for your digestive system to begin with, but I can imagine how cutting it out completely must be awful.

It doesn't need to be a life sentence but, know that both milk and meat tend to bring parasites along with them, and they cause a lot of havoc. Clove, ginger, garlic separately or together is the only solution. So pepper you food with these, 'cause wormwood is horrid!

Plain yogurt with honey has been my exception-salvation. It has all the necessary yogurt-culture-enzymes that help our stomach acids break down everything that comes down the hatch.

ReplyDeleteNo, it's not unusual for your body to turn on you suddenly. I went for 26 years without any sign of eczema and then suddenly developed it. The culprit: tomatoes. And I LOVE tomatoes. It's so sad. But I still manage to sneak a few every now and then and deal with the consequences later. But do you know how hard it is to not cook with tomatoes? They are in everything! I had to completely change the way I cook >:(

The same exact thing happened to me last summer! You are totally normal! I switched to soy products (Silk Milk, WholeSoy yogurt, Dairy Free cheese) and the troubles I was having went away completely. ReplyDeleteso hard to give up dairy as it's such an american staple. but the tea without the milk will grow on you and you'll get so you've never missed. i drink my tea black too and love it. some bodies just don't do well with dairy, for the most part i'm fine with it, but there are times it doesn't sit well:(
ReplyDeleteI had to give up milk and ice cream many years ago for the same reason as you. Luckily I can still tolerate cheese. It didn't take me long to adjust...hope you adjust quickly as well!

My dad was like you too, and he had problems with milk, but little by little he got used to it. And allergies like that have a period and they go away after a while, so don't worry :)

Hey, that's a pain for you. I choose to drink soy (to me, vita-soy in the green pack tastes the best, long life or fresh) it takes a while to adjust and then you don't notice it at all.

You poor thing Kellie! Have you tried herbal teas - there are so many gorgeous ones out there (they are more refreshing too I think)! I'm the opposite to you, I was intolerant until about 18-19 and then started to be able to have dairy. It's hard at first, but you'll find other yummies to have :-) (Easter isn't good though)!!!! xxxxxx
ReplyDeleteOh, poor you. I remember when I was little I had an allergy to products with milk (no chocolate or icecreams - it was absolute torture for nine year old girl!) Eventually the allergy went away though - this might happen to you also.
ReplyDeletei love black tea and enjoy soy milk in coffee, there are lots of different kinds of soy milk so you will have to hunt around till you find one you like. also... i used to wear clip on earring for years and a few years ago my body started rejecting the metal and i could no longer wear them! oh well...

Aww that is not good. I don't drink much milk anyway but if I do I usually have rice milk. It's not too bad, just a bit watery but better than soy.

ReplyDeleteI have always had milk allergies, as do my mom and brothers, so, growing up, I just never drank it. My dad was the only milk drinker in the fam. In college, I started drinking soy milk, and I have to say that I really enjoy it (especially the vanilla kind!) And I don't think you are weird-- I have started to develop tolerance issues with certain foods that never used to bother me. I think it is a sad thing that can happen as we age! xo

ReplyDeleteYeah its not the greatest at first but years after I can tell you I love soymilk (plain), use soy creamer & do soy lattes. Cheese & ice cream still make tiny reoccurances but first I take a Fast Act Ultra Lactiad. Its a dose of the enzyme that processes the lactose...which you're body is now not making enough of or none at all.
ReplyDeleteA few tips. You may still be able to do yogurt & the harder the cheese the less lactose it still carries. I can do a bit of parmeggiano reggiano with no side effects. Also with cheese, the higher the quality the less issues I & my lacto buddies have too.

Completely normal! My husband is lactose intolerant. Too much soy can also be bad for you especially for woman. Have you tried almond milk? I think it tastes better and its better for you. Sorry if I sound like a commercial. :)

ReplyDeleteHi Kellie oh so sorry you have had a reaction to dairy A2 milk is good & rice milk, my sister had to completly change her diet too if you need any help with finding the right foods I can pass her e-mail on she is doing a degree in natrapathy,it was hard at first but before you know it you will find the alternatives. Love the picks by the way, oh ginger & lemon tea is really nice & if you like it sweet a bit of honey added helps hope you have a great weekend :)

same thing here, no lactose pour moi. soya is great in coffee, you'll grow to like the taste!
ReplyDeleteA mere 20% of people are able to properly digest lactose. Go for lactose free milk, goats milk, or a good brand of soy. Rice and Almond are very very sad in tea. I drink almond but I use Goats, lactose free creamer, or soy half and half in my coffee.
ReplyDeleteHere is a break down of the soy brands...
- If you like the soy taste, buy a no name in China town
-If you like sweet/thick dessert-type milk So Nice Vanilla- or So Good (I think they are connected) I can't drink anything this thick but the flavours are great in coffee and tea.
-If you like something relatively neutral and same texture as milk Nutrasoy or Eden Organics
-For baking/cooking- Nutrasoy unsweetened is the most neutral and versatile (good in savory)
- For cream sauces- coconut milk (seafood chowder is sooo much better made thai-style) or Eden Organic's soy heavy cream- 1/4 C is enough to make a cream sauce pasta for 2-4 people.
- Ice cream: Soy Delicious chocolate mint is heaven. Rice dream is apparently decent. I just stick with fruit-only gelato.
-Drinking: Almond Dream Original- its not fortified, but it is by far the best tasting. Its also not organic, but I havent found a fortified or organic seed milk that I love yet. Rice milk has a LOT of added sugar and sodium, and very little nutritional value, so the 60 cal/cup refreshment that is Almond Breeze- with just a touch of protein and less additives than the good tasting rice milks.
Hope this helps! I have tried every brand at the average health food store of rice, almond, and soy. Now I am working on Hemp, but it isn't winning points for anything but smoothies. Homemade nut and seed milks are also pretty yum, but a lot of effort and cost.
Oh- and for cheese... Sheeps milk gouda is a good grilled cheese type sub, all older cheeses are mostly lactose free (thought they cost more...), and dont ever think of trying 'vegan' cheese. You will puke.
